New language-learning resources
A little round up of materials for Norwegian, Dutch, Danish and more!
Hey folks,
This is just a quick note to let you know about some new releases and to remind you of some previously released materials as well. Everything is available from my Ko-fi shop, which you can visit here (don’t forget that, if you’re a subscriber to this Substack, you should have a special link to use that’ll get you 25% off all items in the shop). Some of the eBooks are also available from Amazon; for these, I’ve included individual links below.
New releases for Danish include a PDF guide to 500 intermediate/advanced phrases used in the Netflix show Borgen - ideal as a companion to the show (or just for boosting your Danish even if political drama isn’t your bag). Students of Danish might also be interested in two new Norwegian eBooks: the novel Jenny by Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset (which I’m hoping will be available on Amazon soon) and the play Vildanden (The Wild Duck) by Henrik Ibsen. Both of these were written in Norwegian at a time when the written form of that language was still very much in the process of disentangling itself from Danish; works from this period are therefore (I would argue) of equal interest to students of both languages.
New in Dutch is De stille kracht by Louis Couperus, an absolute classic of Dutch literature (I actually studied it back when I did Dutch at uni) and also just a rollicking good read (seances, adultery, creepy-goings-on-as-metaphor-for-colonial-malaise - it’s got it all!).
For students of Spanish, we also have a new eBook: El cisne de Vilamorta by Emilia Pardo Bazán. This is a richly detailed read about life in rural Spain by a pioneering figure in Spanish feminism - highly recommended!
Finally, just a reminder about my Scottish Gaelic resources. There’s a PDF guide to 200+ advanced words and phrases from the novella Banais na Bliadhna, as well as my guide to using Scottish placenames as a guide to the fundamentals of Gaelic grammar - this is also available from Amazon, here.
Well, that’s all for now - if you’re reading this and haven’t yet subscribed to the Substack, make sure you do so you can get your 25% discount on everything in the Ko-fi shop!
I’ll be back in touch before long with some new releases - keep an eye out for a special project coming out in time for Christmas!
All the best until then,
